English-born American Catholic writer; biographer of Belloc, Chesterton, Tolkien, Solzhenitsyn, and others; senior contributor at The Imaginative Conservative; convert from English nationalist youth (he was briefly a National Front activist in the 1970s before his 1989 conversion to Catholicism); the wiki’s named contributor to the contemporary Franco revival via his 2023 Imaginative Conservative defense of the Nationalist side in the Spanish Civil War on Catholic-civilizational grounds.
Why He Matters Here
Per Iberian Vistas, Pearce’s 2023 piece argued:
“In truth, the history of Europe and the world might have been very different if the Christians had not won the war in Spain. If Spain had remained a communist country, it would have been a crucially strategic Soviet outpost in the heart of Western Europe. The iron curtain which fell across central Europe would also have fallen across the Pyrenees. It is possible, therefore, that the Christians of Spain had saved Europe from the infidel in the Civil War as they had saved Europe from the Islamic infidel eight hundred years earlier.”
The framing — Spanish Civil War as Reconquista — is the wiki’s most explicit single instance of the crusading-civilization register applied to Franco. Pearce’s biography (English-nationalist youth → Catholic conversion → traditionalist Catholic intellectual) is also a useful wiki case of the trajectory by which contemporary Catholic-traditionalist conservatism absorbs former far-right activists.
