Who He Is
Curtis Yarvin is a software engineer and political blogger who, under the pseudonym “Mencius Moldbug,” founded the “neoreactionary” (NRx) movement — also known as the Dark Enlightenment (a term coined by “accelerationist” philosopher Nick Land). He attended Brown University for his undergraduate degree, then enrolled in a computer science PhD at UC Berkeley, which he did not complete.
Beginning in the 2000s, he took to blogging under the pseudonym Mencius Moldbug. His blog Unqualified Reservations gained an underground following in Silicon Valley, where he became “a pioneer of nerdy avant-garde and right-wing bro-speak.” Field’s assessment: “Yarvin’s writing is very bad, and the reasoning is worse; come for the edgelord conspiracism (‘Did Barack Obama Go to Columbia?’ pondered Moldbug in 2008), stay for the non sequiturs and slapdash pseudohistorical bricolage. There may be nothing on the New Right more depressing than the rise of Curtis Yarvin.”
Yarvin is a longtime friend of Peter Thiel — he reportedly watched the 2016 election results come in at Thiel’s house. He is also an acquaintance of JD Vance.
Intellectual Formation
Yarvin’s thinking began as an outgrowth of Silicon Valley libertarianism. He was influenced by Murray Rothbard. His libertarianism eventually morphed into a preference for strict authoritarian rule styled on the self-actualizing tech startup CEO. He is thought to be the earliest popularizer of the “red pill” meme. He believes in “turbocapitalism” and has written about El Salvador under President Bukele as a model “startup state.”
Joshua Tait described him as “a new type of radical Right activist at odds with the conservative mainstream: young, coastal, anonymous, secular, male, and adept at manipulating digital technologies to advance an anti-progressive agenda.”
Core Ideas
Techno-monarchism / neoreaction: Yarvin argues liberal democracy is a failed system — inefficient, corrupt, designed to obscure rather than exercise real power. His prescription: replace democracy with a technocratic absolute monarchy or CEO-run state where a sovereign with clear authority can make decisions and be held accountable. His explicit political preference is for such a system; his blogging is full of appeals to strongmen and Caesarism. In 2024 he recommended Elon Musk for the role of American Caesar.
“The Cathedral”: Yarvin’s term for the interlocking network of media, government, and academia that supposedly exert monolithic and hegemonic power over modern minds. The Cathedral is catchy because it taps into the right’s perpetual concern about liberalism’s failure to live up to moral neutrality (“Look — they aren’t really liberals! It’s like a religion to them!”). Field: “it is also a rebundling of older conservative tropes and bogeymen, from Burnham’s managerial elite, to the administrative state, to Anton’s Davoisie. There is not much to differentiate the Cathedral from Plato’s original notion of the Cave, now with a modern inflection, or from Nietzsche’s worries about the Last Man, or plotlines from The Matrix.”
RAGE: Yarvin’s acronym for his program: “Retire All Government Employees.” In a Substack post on the Cathedral he offers a jokey line about what might happen to elite institutions from the vantage of an imagined future: “They were simply liquidated — rounded up, shot, dumped in a ditch, soaked with gas and burned.” Field: Yarvin’s “thinking is also spiked with a thirst for violence and domination.”
On race and racism: Yarvin has said he’s “not exactly allergic to” white nationalism and racism. The neoreactionary movement and the alt-right share the same anti-democratic, anti-liberal framework; Yarvin is somewhat more elitist and contemptuous of populism (including its white variants), but his criticisms of liberal democratic order are “entirely of a piece with the Hard Right populists and paleoconservatives.”
Role as Conduit to the MAGA New Right
Yarvin’s relationship with Thiel is the central conduit between Silicon Valley neoreaction and the mainstream MAGA coalition. His concept of the Cathedral was absorbed into the New Right’s vocabulary about the “regime,” the “ruling class,” and “woke” institutional power. His Caesarism influenced Thiel and many others.
In 2018-2019, Yarvin gave Michael Anton a copy of Bronze Age Mindset (BAP), which Anton then reviewed for the Claremont Review of Books, helping bring BAP’s ideas into the Claremont mainstream. Yarvin serves as a gateway between the edgelord anonymous internet right and the more respectable intellectual New Right.
